Initiatives

Initiatives

In parallel with the Path to Ottawa events, the Environmental Peacebuilding Association® (EnPAx®) and partner organizations are developing series of flagship initiatives to showcase at the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding in Ottawa. Each initiative advances the field of environmental peacebuilding in discrete ways.

More information about the initiatives will be available here as they take form. In the meantime, if you are interested in showcasing your initiative, please contact conference@environmentalpeacebuilding.org.

-- Environmental Peacebuilding Glossary

Essential Concepts of Environmental Peacebuilding: An A-Z Guide is the first comprehensive reference work of its kind, bringing together 185 entries on the key concepts, frameworks, and institutions that define the field of environmental peacebuilding. The book will be published as open access in late June 2026 with support from the Jubitz Family Foundation and the PeaceNexus Foundation.

Building on the momentum generated by the Path to The Hague initiatives and the 3rd International Conference, the volume draws on the expertise of 229 contributors from across academia, policy, practice, and civil society, spanning disciplines, sectors, and geographies. It covers foundational ideas such as sustainable peace and conflict prevention alongside emerging themes including climate security, gender, and decolonization. Each entry provides a clear definition and, where relevant, traces the concept’s evolution and significance in environmental peacebuilding. All terms are translated into ten languages: Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Yoruba.

In parallel, the Environmental Peacebuilding Champions Program is an additional Path to Ottawa Initiative that brings together 23 of the publication's contributors to foster dialogue around environmental peacebuilding and build engagement around the forthcoming Essential Concepts of Environmental Peacebuilding: An A - Z Guide. Champions, representing diverse geographic regions, professional backgrounds, and perspectives, are hosting events in their communities and institutions in the lead-up to the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding in Ottawa.

The Community of Practice on Environment, Climate, Conflict, and Peace (ECCP) is pulling together a visual 'Story Gallery' of the incredible work our community members do to support environmental peacebuilding efforts around the world. Through compelling photos and brief narratives, the project seeks to share powerful moments, ideas, and projects across the environmental peacebuilding landscape. These photos will be shared in an online gallery, as well as in a physical exhibition at the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding. To submit an idea, please complete this form and submit your image(s): https://forms.gle/jULvgidMYqaAznyw8. (Note: The form requires a Google sign-in, as it involves directly uploading image files.
