The GERD Dispute: Lessons for Water Governance and the Future of the Nile Basin

Water-related conflict is among the key concerns for a future marked by rising incidences of droughts, increasing water scarcity, and growing demands. The main aquatic project that has shaped contemporary diplomatic relations in the Nile Basin is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Being the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa, with a maximal power production capacity of 5150 MW, it is capable of generating electricity for millions of Ethiopians and people in neighboring countries.
