Environmental peacebuilding and climate security are attracting an increasingly diverse group of stakeholders at the intersection of environment, climate, peace and conflict. But are we all speaking the same language? Over the past few years, practical experiences and local perspectives have increasingly enriched ongoing conversations, and led to the creation of new collaborations across sectoral boundaries. This diversity can create challenges when different frames of reference or interpretations of key terms lead to miscommunication.

This interactive workshop brings together The Hague-based practitioners, researchers and students from various sectors and disciplines to explore how our own assumptions, sector-specific definitions and institutional frameworks shape our understanding of environment, climate, conflict and peace, and how they may become barriers to collaboration. Participants will then be invited to start developing a common language on these issues, using the upcoming Environmental Peacebuilding Glossary as a reference point. The workshop is co-organized by the Environmental Peacebuilding Association, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and the Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre based at the International Institute of Social Studies.
